Unicorn Open 2004

The tournament of Chemie Weißensee in cooperation with the Gewerbepark Georg Knorr

Report of the tournament by Jan Kinder:

With 125 participants of 10 countries (Belgium, Bosnia, England, Germany, Mongolia, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Switzerland and Syria) we could set a new record of participants in this year.

Even in the 1st round there was some surprises: FM Marc Lacrosse lost against the player of Chemie Denis Schmarr (DWZ 1802) who should play a strong tournament. Also WFM Bayanmonh Anhchimeg had to give up the whole point against Martin Viehweger.

In the 2nd round Steve Berger (ELO 2335) had to take a bitter defead, when he lost against Matthias Hahlbohm. Our star (Denis) won against the specialist of blitz, Simon Prudlo, after winning a pawn in the middle-game.

In the 3rd round only 1 of 4 players of Chemie reached the whole point: IM Günther Möhring. Thilo Keskowski had lost against the favourite GM Robert Rabiega on board 1. Denis consumed all his energy at the longtime game in the morning. FM Norman Thielsch gave up a half point against Peter Schmidt.

In the 4th round four of the remaining 10 players with full points could win once more. There was only one draw in room 1 (Thomas Hämmerlein versus IM Ralf Schöne). Remained with 4 points were: GM Robert Rabiega, Andreas Breier, IM Günther Möhring and Reinhard Postler. Denis won his game in the morning: He could turn around a difficult end-game and so he had 3 of 4 points and was 12th in the ranking after the 4th round.

In the 5th round all the games at the first two boards ended with a draw. FM Norman Thielsch und Thomas Hämmerlein, both won their games. Behind them: 4 players with 4 points of 5 games. The round on the evening should bring a preliminary decision! And what's about Denis? Winning wasn't possible for him, but a draw wasn't so bad.

In the 6th round the players fighted on the boards - only one draw on the first 8 boards (Andreas Breier versus Reinhard Postler). At the duel the both players of Chemie the old-master (IM Günther Möhring) could beat the youngster (FM Norman Thielsch) and led the ranking together with GM Robert Rabiega Beside Andreas Breier and Reinhard Postler two players of Rotation, Benjamin Dauth and Christian Düster had 5 points of 6 games as well, too.

At the end of our traditional tournament the favourite GM Robert Rabiega could win against IM Günther Möhring.

The fight to the places 5 and 6 was decided on the boards at the back, because it depended on the score. The 1st score decided on IM Ralf Schöne.
